The Durban Growth Summit

Building businesses. Building relationships. Building Durban. With support from Rooted Faith Foundation, Northplace Church hosted its inaugural summit — two days of practical business teaching, real connection, and the gospel lived out in service to a city.

The Vision

Taking the Gospel beyond the four walls

The Durban Growth Summit was born from Northplace Church and Northplace Centre's calling to take the Gospel beyond the four walls of the church and into the gates of influence that shape their city. Guided by the motto “For the City,” they believe that serving people with excellence, generosity, and love is one of the most powerful ways to demonstrate the heart of Christ.

This was not a church programme dressed up as a business event, but a genuine act of service to Durban. Over two days, the inaugural summit brought together entrepreneurs, professionals, students, creatives, and business owners under the theme “Logo to Loyalty” — engaging workshops, panel discussions, and practical conversations on leadership, branding, innovation, and sustainable growth.

Many attendees later discovered the event was hosted by a church community — and were struck by the generosity, excellence, and authenticity they experienced. For us, that response was not a surprise. It was the fruit of a community committed to serving without condition or agenda.

The Summit

Workshops, panels & real conversations

The summit was built around one conviction: people grow best when they are in the room with others on the same journey. Across two days, participants moved through workshops, panels, networking sessions, and honest business conversations — not academic theory, but the kind of wisdom that makes a difference on Monday morning.

Many attendees said it was unlike any business event they had been to — a warmth and a welcome they did not expect, and found deeply refreshing.

Shark Tank

More than a competition — a platform for belief

One of the most memorable features of the summit was the Shark Tank competition — an invitation for entrepreneurs at every stage to stand up, pitch their business, and be seen. The top three finalists competed for a first prize of $5,000.

But what moved the room was a decision made before the competition began: every person who stepped onto that stage to pitch — regardless of placing — would receive $500in recognition of their courage. For some founders, it was the first time they had ever spoken in front of a crowd. They didn't just pitch a business — they overcame something.

Boniswa — a solution born from survival

Boniswa did not start her business from ambition alone. She built it out of necessity — out of a life-threatening situation that forced her to find a solution where none existed. What began as survival became a product, and that product became a business. The room was given the privilege of hearing that story firsthand, in her own words. That is the kind of entrepreneurship the summit was built to honour — not just the polished pitch, but the real, human story behind it.

Jordy — a moment that stopped the room

Jordy fled the Democratic Republic of Congo for his safety. Arriving in South Africa with very little, he built a barbershop that became far more than a place for grooming — a sanctuary where clients receive a listening ear, support, and access to mental health resources. When his name was called as the third-place winner, he did not wave or smile. He sank to his knees. It was not the prize that overwhelmed him, he later said, but the simple reality that someone believed in him.

The Gala

Where connections became community

The Gala Networking Evening was more than a celebration — it was a statement. South Africa carries one of the highest inequality rates in the world, with official unemployment at 32.7% and youth unemployment (ages 18–34) at 45.9%. These are not abstract statistics; they are the lived reality of the city Northplace is called to serve.

Against that backdrop, the Gala was a living picture of what the Church can offer when it opens its doors without condition. Business owners, professionals, and aspiring founders from different industries, generations, cultures, and faith backgrounds shared tables, swapped ideas, and began collaborations that are still developing.

Looking Ahead

The summit continues — Connect Zone

The response confirmed a deep, unmet hunger for genuine connection and practical support. Northplace Centre is now building Connect Zone — not a programme, but an ongoing community with a long-term commitment to the entrepreneurs of Durban:

Partners in the Vision

Rooted Faith Foundation is grateful to come alongside Northplace Church, Stone Table, and every partner whose generosity made it possible for 290 people to walk through the doors of Northplace Centre and experience a community that genuinely cares about their success, their dignity, and their flourishing. This is what happens when the Church steps beyond its walls and serves its city.
